This is a collection of Bengali short stories and poems by some renowned as well as fledgling and experimental writers. The reader will find an accurate and modern translation of their works which have maintained their startling originality of theme and language. The themes of the stories and poems are wide ranging. They deal with rural life, mother-daughter relationships, love, marriage and struggle in the face of overwhelming odds. Firdous Azim
Firdous Azim is Professor of English at BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She has published widely on literary, cultural and women’s issues both inside and outside the country. Her critical writings include The Colonial Rise of the Novel (1993), as well as contributions on postcolonial and women’s writings in journals and edited anthologies. She is a founding member of Naripokkho, a women’s activist group in Bangladesh.
Niaz Zaman
Niaz Zaman has edited several anthologies, including Selected Stories from Bangladesh, 1971 and After, The Escape and Other Stories. Her study of the Partition, A Divided Legacy: The Partition in Selected Novels of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, won the Atwar Hussain Award of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh and the National Archives Award. She was consulting editor, Arts and Humanities for Banglapedia and editor of the Bangladesh Journal of American Studies.
