In August 2024, Bangladesh embarked on a democratic transition after the spectacular downfall of a personalistic autocracy following a popular uprising that began in July. Three earlier endeavors to consolidate the country’s democracy failed to reach the desired destination. Will Bangladesh succeed this time around? More broadly, what are the challenges to democratic transition? Who are the primary actors? A Fractured Path responds to these questions, drawing on the experiences of countries that succeeded or failed in this transition in the past half-century. Lucidly written, intensely probing and deeply engrossing, this book is a must-read for those who are interested in Bangladeshi politics, whether as academics, policymakers, or activists. Those who study democratic transitions elsewhere will also find the book immensely helpful.
